Originally known as Stumptown, Whitefish started out as a logging town. However, it found its true renown when the Great Northern Railway came to town in 1891. Whitefish flourished in its role as a railway hub. The Depot building is listed on the National Registry of Historic Buildings and has been turned into a museum.  It is still a pivotal Amtrak stop for anyone traveling the rails.

Activities abound in Whitefish. If downhill skiing and snowboarding don’t happen to be your wintertime forte, grab your cross-country skis (or snowshoes), and head down to the Whitefish Lake Golf Course for incredible ski trails. Tired of that? Don’t forget to head on over to Stumptown Ice Den for some ice-skating lessons. Finding a way to spend your summer evening after a day of hiking, biking, or boating is effortless. From sunbathing on the Whitefish City Beach, eating dinner at a gourmet restaurant, or enjoying live music at the weekly farmers’ market, your options are plentiful.

Whitefish is known for its friendly people and homey atmosphere. If your style is rustic, modern, or maybe even a little bit western, you’re sure to find something that suits you just right. The tight knit community is ideal for those looking for the small-town feel, but the town’s energy adds a deep sense of culture.

North Valley Hospital, built in the early 2000’s, provides exceptional medical care in surgery, emergencies, maternity services, and more. Between the expertise at North Valley Hospital and Kalispell Regional Medical Center, the Flathead Valley is equipped with extraordinary medical resources. This is ideal not only for the patients, but it also allows medical personnel opportunities in cutting-edge technologies.

It’s hard to deny, Whitefish is a pretty special place. If you enjoy outdoor pursuits, shopping in downtown boutiques, or simply want to find a pleasant town to retire in, keep Whitefish at the top of your list.
