Dubbed the “Gateway to Glacier National Park”, Columbia Falls, Montana, is a quaint hometown community with a population of just over 4,600. Located to the west of the Rocky Mountain Divide, its stunning mountains are perfect for the outdoor enthusiast.
The city of Columbia Falls maintains approximately 28 acres of parkland, including baseball and soccer fields, picnic areas, playgrounds, and a band shell. Think you’ll be bored? Think again! You could visit the House of Mystery, which is Montana’s only natural vortex. Spend your Thursday evening perusing the local Farmer’s Market; find some dinner, savor some ice cream, and enjoy some live music. Or, if you’re feeling just a little bit country, head down to the weekly Brash Rodeo. Barrel racing and bull riding are just the beginning.
Due to its central location within the Flathead Valley, Columbia Falls boasts a short 15-minute drive to one of the United States’ most beloved protected parks. Known as the “the Crown of the Continent”, Glacier National Park offers more than 700 miles of maintained trails. Enjoy a challenging climb to one of the park’s tallest peaks, or simply take your family on a stroll by the river.
Also nearby is Hungry Horse Reservoir, a preferred boating and picnicking destination for many of the valley’s residents. In addition, Whitefish Mountain Resort is about a 20 minute drive that takes you to a variety of outdoor adventures including: epic winter skiing or snowboarding. The summer months offer mountain biking, zip line tours, aerial park adventuring, alpine sliding, and other scenic lift rides.
For those water enthusiasts among us, Montana’s largest water theme park, Big Sky Water Slides, claims Columbia Falls as its home. Or, if competitive swimming is more up your alley, the Pinewood Family Aquatic Center is a 25-metre competitive swimming pool. You can enjoy a fun dip with your friends during free swim, or challenge neighboring swim teams with your crawl stroke.
If you find natural water sources appealing, you will find no end to the rafting, kayaking, canoeing, and fishing in the surrounding lakes and rivers. The Flathead, North Fork, Middle Fork, and South Fork Rivers are all mere minutes from city limits. The Flathead River flows along the eastern boundary of the city, giving one of Columbia Falls’ most beautiful parks its 900+ feet of river frontage. This River’s Edge Park not only gives great access to the river via walking paths through grassy meadows, it’s also the home to the Columbia Falls community garden.
The average weather in Columbia Falls ranges from a high of 82 degrees and a low of 52 degrees in July, to a high of 31 degrees with a low of 19 degrees in January. Rainfall averages approximately 19 inches, while snowfall evens out at about 56 inches.
